Open Google Maps app and click button on map to get current location. Now come back to your application and try to get current location and it will work.

Its working for me now… i just debugged the code and found that i am getting loc as null in the below snippet

          loc = locationManager .getLastKnownLocation(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER);

          i tried uncommenting the below snippet in the LocationTrack Class /*if (checkNetwork) {

          if (locationManager != null) { loc = locationManager .getLastKnownLocation(LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER);

Latitude completely sucks, people that I used to be able to always see are now constantly stale and have 'unknown' locations -- all except one friend with an iphone, although another friend with an iphone shows as stale as well -- has been nonoperational for a few weeks, which is very frustrating, and I don't know how to remedy it. Any information would be greatly appreciated, don't really know how to fix it and it is a major bummer and inconvenience.

Re: Have a GPS location issue? Read this. Guamaniac 24.06.12 20:40 Daniel,

I have a GPS issue that has been ongoing for several months.

Phone: Motorola Droid 1 Android: 2.2.3 Service provider: IT&E Google Maps: 6.8.1 Google My Tracks 1.1.16

Problem/Description: I hike regularly and use My Tracks to record the hikes.  I have recorded almost 100 hikes and saved them to Google Maps/Docs.  A few months ago it stopped working (would not lock a location "Waiting for better GPS fix").  Maps also does not have a location fix.  I wiped the My Tracks data, tried uninstalling and reinstalling it.  I installed some other GPS apps (GPS Status and GPS test) to try and troubleshoot the problem to no avail.  I figured it was a problem with the phone hardware.

Then I travelled to Korea (Jeju) and Indonesia and it worked again  It could get a fix and track my movements when hiking or driving in a car.  So now I think the phone hardware is not the problem.  Then I return home to Guam, and again it doesn't work.

I tried recording a hike earlier this month.  It would not lock a location, but I pressed record track anyway.  It has sporadic dots all over the ocean south of Hawaii and thinks I hiked 280+ miles in about 2 hrs.  Obviously there is something wrong with the GPS.  I now think this is a problem with the phone software - possibly Maps since others are also having problems.  Incidentally the erroneous track shows up at Long 144W and Guam is 144E, so maybe there is some bad code it the program that is mixing up E and W ???

Now that I read some of these posts, I am going to try and uninstall Maps to see if it helps.  Appreciate any other advise you can offer...

Re: Have a GPS location issue? Read this. Silverblue 25.06.12 11:53 Hello! Two days ago I experienced problems with GPS lock, as I suddenly appeared on my phone screen at Columbia State University, Columbia, TN, though I was near Riga, Latvia. This happened when I opened my Latitude App. This repeated also yesterday.
        1. phone model and service provider - Samsung Galaxy S2, Latvian Mobile Telephone
        2. OS and Google Maps version - Android 4.0.3, GM version 6.8.1
        3. brief summary of your issue - wrong GPS lock - takes me miles away from my real location
        4. step-by-step reproduction steps - the issue appeared when I used Latitude App with GPS on, Wi-Fi off. It located me back when I refreched a number of times, or connected back to Wi-Fi.
The previously reported issue with friends locations being stale for days seems to have fixed now, but there some other strange behaviors continue to appear - i.e. one of my friend's location (on Android phone) updates immediately when I open my Latitude App, whereas, other friend's locations (on Symbian and Blackberry OS) can stay unupdated for about an hour or even longer. One more thing I noticed - the location to those friends become less precise. For example, some of them now appear in houses across the street (knowing they are at home), whereas this was not an issue previously.

        4. With wifi positioning turned off: Open maps and app cannot find position at all. With wifi positioning turned on: Open maps and app finds position, but accuracy bubble fluctuates between very large and very small.  Position will jump from place to place frequently.

        3. List directions work, although sometimes the GPS places me somewhere where I was, for example, the day before.  When I use Navigation, it always and forever says "Follow the Route" at the top, and "Searching for GPS..." at the bottom.  I have used the GPS Navigation with a MapQuest app that I installed, and that works just fine.  I would like to go back to using Google navigation, though.
        4. step-by-step reproduction steps - I do not know what you mean by this.
I have tried uninstalling updates, the app itself, and clearing data and cache.  Nothing works.

Read this. crisdego 28.06.12 5:29 1 Atrix 4g ita, h3g dk 2 Android version 2.3.4 google maps version 6.9.0 3 seems that Gmaps do not use gps to fix position, only internet info. with or without GPS on it gives the same results. But other apps (like navigation and endomondo) fix perfect the position. Using "gps aids" app seems that the gps works and many satellites are seen and locked. 4 uninstalled the updates (turning back to 5.8 version) seems to fix the problem. so maybe it's not a big problem.

When Google Maps is opened the GPS icon at the top of the screen shows that it is looking for, and then acquires, a satellite lock, but my position is never pinpointed.  The blue circle appears to be the same diameter as when the GPS is turned off and the phone is only calulating my position by cell signal.  Switching immediately to Google Navigate shows that the GPS lock is indeed available and Navigate works correctly.  GPS Status also shows lock.  If Maps is uninstalled and the phone restarted, the base version of Maps works fine.  Reinstall the current Maps and the issue remains.

Position moves around randomly. Wifi positioning seems to help, however it will still not lock on, and will still move around randomly.  The app GPS test shows that I always have 8+ satellites . Google Nav works perfectly and other apps show that my GPS is working.  I have tested it going slowly and driving down an interstate, on cloudy and clear days, inside and outside.4. This issue does not go away. It is this way every time I start Google maps.

I posted quite some time ago and will post again hoping some of you may find relief.  My "Searching For GPS" issue was directly related to the installation of a third party program... in my case, it was SkyVI - a program to emulate Siri on the iPhone.  I uninstalled all Google Map updates, uninstalled SkyVI, rebooted the Razr Maxx, updated Google Maps and my problem was solved.  I tested my work by reinstalling SkyVI - at which time I immediately got the "Searching For GPS" message again.  I uninstalled, rebooted, updated and all has been working fine.   Just like a pc, our smart phones are subject to "Preference Conflicts" by our third party software.  Think about when your GPS problem started, think about what you may have recently downloaded, and you may need to play guess and check through uninstallation and updating to solve your problem.  I'd bet at least half of you have a problem caused by a Preference issue.   Good Luck!

        1. Samsung galaxy S2 T989, T-Mobile 2. ICS 4.0 3 official ROM, Google Map version 6.9.0(latest), My Tracks version: 1.1.16 3. It takes My Tracks more than 10 minutes, sometimes half an hour to locate my phone's GPS. Google Map works much better, but still slower than before.

        4. Steps to reproduce: just run Google map or My Tracks.

Other programs which use GPS don't have this problem.

When my phone was GB2.3.6, it didn't have this problem.

I would post verision number but I was forced to uninstall it to have working maps again. Stock maps version is 5.3.1 which works fine. 3. Latest version of google maps (as of 7-9-12) can't get a gps fix even though other applications can. Says location is temporary unavailable. 4. Simple to reproduce. Update google maps to latest version on a factory reset phone. Reverting back to the original version fixes the issue. Have had issues with the latest Google maps with two different Motorola XPRT's. Google needs to fix this on their end.

I noticed a strange behavior by Latitude again - one of my friends starts to jump between two locations when I do manual refresh on my mobile phone. One time he is about 20 km away from his home (and that is his actual current location), next time after refresh (just reopening Latitude on the phone after about 5-7 minutes) his location jumps back to his home. After some time he returns back to his current location. Why this happens? Has anyone else noticed the same strange behavior by Latitude?     By the way, this has already happened previously once, after which all friends started to go 'stale'. For me, 6.6.0 is that last version that seems to work properly. When I remove all updates, then force in the 6.6.0 update and turn off automatic updates, it seems to work as expected for that version. The bug appears to be a wrong GPS accuracy value which causes Maps to ignore the GPS location fix. It is apparently shown as very inaccurate within Google Maps and ignored even when it is spot on based on many satellite locks in other apps that use the same GPS info.

Not safe. The voices are still changing in Navigation. There's nothing to reproduce to get these results.  Turn on location services, open maps and/or navigation.  Happens every time without fail. Seems to have come on with ICS or that last Maps update.

With "Use wireless network" setting on I get a location but not the fluctuation you mention. Sometimes it is reasonably accurate and sometimes not, which I believe is to be expected when using the wireless location service. If I turn off the wireless network setting and only have the "Use GPS satellites" setting on maps can never seem to locate my position. It seems like it is accessing the GPS (the GPS indicator icon blinks) but after a short time it always displays the message "your current location is temporarily unavailable". Things I have tried.
        • Uninstalling and reinstalling the Maps updates.
        • Clearing the maps data.
        • Re-calibrating the compass.
        • I think that I have ruled out the GPS hardware in the phone being the problem as I have installed GPS Test along with another app that uses GPS for location and both are able to find GPS signals and determine my location.

If I need to take a left turn and I am waiting for the signal to turn green, it kept rerouting me. 3) Routing issues, once it tried rerouting me 10 times in a loop in 1 min before i had to kill it and i was on the route all the time. 4) Routing frozen. It got stuck on a particular turn and took few seconds before it came back to senses. It has happened twice with me. 5) The new voices 2 female and 1 male is annoying sometimes. Usually I have noticed that 2 miles ahead of exit its a female, then 1 mile ahead is female and then for rest its male. The second female voice sounds like a person with broken voice. All these issues started with ICS and google maps upgrade. None existed before. I tried uninstalling updates but i got a message that maps crashed. so i reinstalled but this time directly with 6.9 version and still same issues.

CaGaPeach 17.08.12 8:33 Razr Maxx, ICS, Maps 6.10 - the 6.10 update did nothing to fix my problems.  The only improvement I've seen in months is that a couple weeks ago BEFORE the last 6.10 update, the upcoming turn warnings started working again and the ugly voice only checks in occasionally now.  I get 1/4 mile warnings about turning left or right and the name of the road.  Navigation GPS still takes miles to connect.  The worst problem is that Navigation has no idea how to get somewhere.  It does not recognize roads and routes that it once knew.  When I am on surface roads, Navigation continually wants me to do U turns and get on the freeway.  Most times Navigation is extremely limited in routes and tries to send me miles out of the way, re-entering the road I was on from the other end.  I can be on the correct road and only 200 yards from my destination and Navigation does not realize it, sending me in a wide circle to come in from the other direction. We were traveling back east 2 weeks ago and I could not depend on Navigation at all.  Google, please go back to the old maps and navigation...

Whenever I try to use the navigation feature on Google Maps, it says "Searching for GPS," and there's a blue circle in an area where I'm estimated to be, but not an exact location. It makes navigation very difficult. 4. Enter destination, press the "directions" option, and then click the navigation button. I didn't used to have any problems with this. I can't remember the last time it worked or the version that it worked with, though.

The GPS symbol can be seen blinking while the maps application is trying to lock to the gps location but nothing happens. The app also sometime freezes and quits automatically when it doesn't respond. Graphic artifacts can also be seen sometimes when zooming in and out of the maps. Reverting  back to stock version 5.8.0 resolves all the bugs found since the last few in updates.

I reside in the state of Washington however certain restaurants I frequent allow me to consistently reproduce this issue. My suspicion is that this is related to an issue with either Google's implementation of a Wi-Fi positioning system and/or erroneous data in their beacon database as my location is displayed correctly when I temporarily disable Wi-Fi to test this theory.

        4. Can consistently reproduce the issue with the following steps:
          • Return to locations where issue is apparent.
            • One such location is "Matt's Rotisserie & Oyster Lounge, 16551 Northeast 74th Street, Redmond, WA".
          • Be sure Wi-Fi is enabled along with all core location services in the OS.
          • Load Google Maps or any application that makes use of your location and wait for a fix. You should appear in Cisco, TX.
          • When you appear in Cisco, TX, turn off Wi-Fi to force a fix from GPS satellites, you should then appear in the correct location.

Navigation had me take the Harrison St exit after the Bay Bridge and then get immediately back on the bridge going east! Then it had me exit on Treasure Island, turn around and come back west on the bridge to SF. It then tried to get me to exit on Harrison again with the apparent intention of having me driving in circles on the Bay Bridge! I ignored the directions and then Navigation wanted me to take 101 North to the Golden Gate Bridge!? I ignored this obviously bad direction as well and took 101 South. Once I was past the turn-off for 101 North the software finally figured out where I really wanted to go. 4. Enter address and follow directions. The address was entered correctly. Obviously there is a problem Navigation being very confused by San Francisco. Please fix! Thanks!

Re: Have a GPS location issue? Read this. CaGaPeach 11.10.12 10:35 These problems with Maps/Navigation started back in June.  It's now October.  A while back there was a problem with the Google Calendar Sync and it was fixed very quickly.  Maybe Google needs to have the Calendar folks take a look at the Maps/Navigation problems, too?  The only improvement I've seen since June is that now there's only 1 voice instead of 3 voices. Navigation and maps still can't locate me and the only routes in navigation seem to be on the freeways no matter how close I am to my destination on surface streets.  GPS takes up to 5 miles to be located. Does anyone know if the Verizon Navigation is worth the $?

Jeanne T 18.10.12 13:49 FIX for GPS on Motorola Droids! Finally reached someone at Motorola who was able to help me with Navigation problems, follow these steps: 1. Go to Manage Apps (under the little 4 squares at the bottom left)2. Go to Maps3. Clear Data 4. Turn your phone off and on again5. Should be able to connect to GPS and start talking to you again, although it did take it a few minutes. Not sure how long this will work, but it's working again for now...good luck.
Re: Have a GPS location issue? Read this. CaGaPeach 18.10.12 14:13 Nope, did this several times a month or more ago and it still does not work on my Razr Maxx when I tried it just now.  I waited a couple of minutes and the GPS still did not connect.  The Maps application has my location as several blocks from where I actually live.  That has been the one constant thing about Maps -- it has no idea where I am.  If I'm in the car and activate Navigation, it takes about 5 miles before GPS locks on and my location eventually catches up.  However, location is not as accurate as it once was.  While navigating It usually thinks I'm on an access road next to the freeway rather than on the freeway.  And, navigation on surface roads is rare; she always wants me to get on the freeway even though I'm on the same road and close to my destination. Voice is no problem now as there is only 1 voice rather than 3.  Also, the upcoming turns are working again and have been for a while. Voice and upcoming turns are the only improvement I've seen with the last 2 updates.

Re: Have a GPS location issue? Read this. wviebahn 11.11.12 13:49 Hi, Alan, you took great troubles trying to get around this Google Maps GPS problem. But my impression is, that it's not a problem of the soft- or hardware environment, but solely of the app itself: On my Motorola Atrix 4G Google Maps very often is off hundreds of metres, while at the same moment, at the same spot, with the same device Locus Pro is exact almost to the metre (see my post with screenshots). So to me, and I can only recomend this to everybody, there's only one solution: not to use Google Maps for locating and everthing, that's dependend on that, and instead the very much better Locus Pro (by a little Czech company!).Cheers!wviebahn

Ted Welton 12.02.13 5:30 On my Samsung Galaxy S3 I have the same issue.  The only way that I can change this is to go to GPS settings and select "Location and Google search - "Allows Google to use your location data for improved search results and other services" which I do not like.  Even though I like the GPS services, I do not like being tracked by others, especially the Feds, not because I fear them, but because they are making everything that is not their business into their business through our convenience of communication.  Looking forward to a solution that works for us consumers.
Re: Have a GPS location issue? Read this. kduck 12.02.13 10:05 Hi Daniel, Here is my info and experience:   1. Droid Razr Maxx, Verizon 2. System Version: 6.16.211.XT912.Verizon.en.US    Android Version:  4.0.4    Baseband version:  CDMA_N_05.11.01P lTEDC_U_09.11.00    Kernel Version:  3.0.8-g29cf5e7    Build number:  6.7.2-180_DHD-16_M4-31    Google Maps Version:  6.14.2 (#6140205) 3.  Obtaining a GPS fix either takes a long time (>20 min) or never happens at all w/o intervention (see below).  Continuous message in status bar says "Searching for GPS" 4.  Steps to reproduce:
        1. Go to open area with unobstructed view of sky.
        2. Power on phone, wait for boot sequence to finish and data connection to be established
        3. From settings/location services ensure all boxes are checked
        4. Start google maps
        5. Wait for 20 minutes or longer w/o a GPS fix
One method that sometimes leads to a GPS fix:
        1. Hold down home key - > select location services screen from list of recent apps -> Disable GPS
        2. Hold down home key - > select maps from list of recent apps
        3. Hold down home key - > select location services screen from list of recent apps -> Enable GPS
        4. Hold down home key - > select maps from list of recent apps
        5. Sometimes, this results in a fix w/in 10 - 20 seconds.  If not, repeat several times
Another method that sometimes leads to a GPS fix:
        1. Hold down power button, select Sleep
        2. Wait 10 seconds
        3. Hold power button to wake phone
        4. Sometimes, this results in a fix w/in 10 - 20 seconds.  If not, repeat several times.
          Additional information:
        • If I enter a building and lose the GPS fix for a period of time (even a short period), the problem will reoccur.
          • This happens whether or not I exit maps prior to entering the building
          • This happens whether or not I turn off GPS prior to entering the building
        • Using the play store app GPS Status in place of Maps in steps above
          • usually shows no GPS signal from any satellite when the issue is occuring
          • sometimes shows a GPS signal from one or two satellites that should not be visible (confirmed with second GPS unit)
          • almost immediately picks up multiple satellite signals when issue is resolved using above steps

Good luck, I hope the powers that be make this a high priority item.

I can get a fix when the phone is in the Motorola Car Dock  I have tried many of the tests others have: 1. Clear cache partition2. Factory Data Reset3. Uninstall / Reinstall Maps3. Use GPS Test or GPS Status or GPS Doctor to clear / reload the AGPS data4. Various combinations of toggling Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi On/Off, Bluetooth On/Off. Nothing works consistently. When I get a GPS fix, it works for hours as long as I do not turn off the display.  The only consistent behaviour is when I use the Motorola Car dock. Choose the settings display speed and compass heading. This launches Maps to get a GPS fix for the compass heading when the phone goes into car dock mode.  This is what I have to do: 1. Put phone in car dock and turn on car dock mode (slide the power/hdmi into the phone).2. Turn off the phone.3. Wait for the power charging icon to appear.3. Turn on the phone. Occasionally, I need to repeat the procedure. Once I get a fix, it will run for hours. I almost never get a GPS fix when the phone is not in the car dock. This started happening in November/December about the time of a Maps update.

Open Maps, search for a location, get directions, navigate.

Re: Have a GPS location issue? Read this. Daniel Mackin 21.03.13 7:19 For those of you new to this thread - please note that the problem was first reported in June of 2012.  I was one who reported then, and my GPS is still not functioning.  I hate to say it, but I doubt Google is going to allocate resources to developing a bug fix before the next scheduled release.  Think about it: even if 1,000 people report the problem, we are a tiny  fraction of users, and it's probably pretty damned expensive to troubleshoot, program, compile, and push out a new fix. I don't intend this post to be ugly; I'm just preparing you folks new to the thread that there is no quick fix. Some have gotten lucky following fixes listed here, but I suspect most of us have not. I don't think it's a network issue as other apps show my location fine. Also, I forgot to mention that I've had my GPS on the whole time.

If I turn the GPS down it shows my location through Wi-Fi though with a poorer precision.  If I go near a window or outside with GPS on it shows me the exact location in a matter of meters. I knew that reinforced concrete can interfere the GPS signal, but a few weeks ago it didn't mutilate it that much.At least, I'm glad I solved the mystery.

Abby - Google Community Manager 18.06.13 14:33 Hi all,Thank you for continuing to share your device information with us.  I’m closing this thread, as it addressed a very specific bug that was fixed quite a while ago, and I don’t want to confuse users who are searching in the forum now. If you’re experiencing location issues, note that your location is dependent on several sources (GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular data), so please give these following steps a try: -Make sure your device has a clear view of the sky: GPS may not work indoors, in a parking garage, surrounded by buildings, in the mountains, underground, etc.-Ensure that your location settings are enabled.-Turn on Wi-Fi: Your device doesn't need to be connected to any Wi-Fi networks, but keeping Wi-Fi on allows Google's location service to work better. If you’ve tried these steps and are still experiencing location issues, please start a new thread and be sure to include:1. phone model and service provider2. OS and Google Maps version3. A brief summary of your issue4. step-by-step reproduction steps Thanks!Abby
