Reporting a stolen iPhone
If you want to make a claim on the insurance for your stolen iPhone you will need a Police Crime Number, so you will have to report the iPhone as stolen.
When you report a lost or stolen iPhone to the police you may need to give them the serial number of your iPhone. You obviously don't have the device itself to check but you may still be able to find it. Here's how to find an iPhone's serial number :
- If you have Find My iPhone set up you will be able to find the serial number by going to Settings > Your Name and tapping on the device in question. You will need to enter your Apple ID password and also answer two questions that you have previously provided questions to, but once you are in you will see the serial number for that device.
- If the iPhone is synced with iTunes you should be able to find the serial number in iTunes.
- If you have the device's original packaging you should be able to see the serial number beside the barcode.
- If you have your receipt for the iPhone the serial number should be on it.
Part 2: Track iPhone without app using iCloud
Another free method to track iPhone without app is to access your iCloud dashboard. You can perform several features with this, you can locate your iPhone on a map, you can set off an alarm, lock it, or even erase all its contents if you're afraid it has been stolen.
How to track iPhone without app using iCloud:
- Enter your iCloud ID and Password to gain access to your dashboard.
- On your dashboard, choose the 'Find iPhone' icon.
- You'll find an "All devices" drop down menu. Select that, and then choose the lost or stolen iPhone.
- You'll find an interactive map with the exact location of your device. You can toggle navigation to be led to it immediately. You can also activate the following features:
Play Sound: With this the iPhone would start giving off an alarm at full volume for 2 whole minutes so that someone can detect it and keep it safe.
Lost Mode: This will put your phone on lockdown mode, and flash a custom message on the screen.
Erase Data: If you fear your iPhone has been stolen and compromised, you can use this function to delete all data.

Frequently asked questions about finding your iPhone
Since I published this article, many people post comments with similar questions. Below you can find answers to the most asked questions. I hope this helps some of you!
“Can I track my iPhone if it’s turned off, is in airplane mode or not connected to the internet?”
Let me ask you the following: can you access your mobile browser and google something if your phone is off, in airplane mode or has no data connection? Correct…no you can’t. Same thing applies to tracking your phone. As long as it doesn’t have a working connection to the internet, it won’t be able to send any location data.
With Find My iPhone you can let the tool check regularly for your iPhone’s location. As soon as it goes back online (someone charges and turns it on, for example), Find My iPhone will notify you. This enables you to locate it (literally) as soon as possible. You can also check your Google Maps Timeline (see above) for your phone’s last reported location to Google.
“Is it possible to find my iPhone if someone turns off location services?”
Luckily, even if a stranger turns off location services on your iPhone, it’s still possible to locate your iPhone. With Find My iPhone you can activate the so-called ‘Lost Mode’. This activates location services on your iPhone remotely and immediately tries to locate it. It will stay activated as long as no one unlocks your device.
“Can I still locate my iPhone if I have already erased my iPhone?”
Bad news. Once an iPhone has been erased, it’s not possible to locate it anymore. The whole sense behind erasing a phone is to delete everything, including personal data, images, user settings and all logins (including iCloud). Without a connected iCloud or Google account, tracking isn’t possible. I recommend that you try to use your Google Maps Timeline (covered above) to get the last recorded location of your phone.
“I forgot my iCloud password and cannot locate my iPhone. How do I get my password back?”
In order to use Find my iPhone, you need to sign into your iCloud account. If you forgot your password, then this isn’t possible, of course. Apple makes it fairly easy to reset your Apple ID password (same one as on iCloud). All you need is your backup email account. Below you find the steps you need to follow:
- In your browser visit appleid.apple.com .
- Below the signup, click on “Forgot Apple ID or password?”
- Enter your Apple ID email address and click continue
- You’re offered two ways to reset your password. Either by sending a reset link to your backup email address or by answering the security questions you set up while creating your Apple ID account.
- Choose one of the options (easiest is via backup email address)
- If you chose “Get an email”, check your backup account for Apple’s email on how to reset your Apple ID password. In case you don’t receive an email within one hour, please check your other email accounts. Maybe you checked the wrong one and not the actual backup account you chose back when you first created your Apple ID.
- In the email, click the password reset link and follow the upcoming instructions. You’ll have to answer some security questions you set up before and enter your birth date.
- After that, you can enter a new password and confirm the password reset.
- That’s it! Keep in mind that you have to log into your Apple account on all your Apple devices since the old password doesn’t work anymore.
What if I’m not close to any computer to track my iPhone?
In that case, ask friends or try to find a helpful stranger with an iPhone. You can track your lost iPhone using the “Find My iPhone” app on another device. Just make sure that you are signed into your own iCloud Account. Otherwise you’ll just track the iPhone you’re holding in your hand.
I really hope this article helps you find your lost iPhone, iPad or Mac. If you do, it would be great if you share your story in the comments! Also, if you know of any other way to track down a lost Apple device, please let us know.

Find an iPhone which is off or offline
If you hadn't noticed that your phone was missing and you suspect that the battery has now died or someone may have turned your iPhone off, there may still be a way to find it thanks to the Send Last Location feature mentioned above.
There is an option to turn on Send Last Location in Find My iPhone. With this turned the last known location of your iPhone will be stored for 24 hours after the battery runs out. This isn't on by default but when you open Find My iPhone on your iPhone you will see an alert asking you to enable it.
If you have Send Last Location enabled you will be able to see where your iPhone was when it ran out of battery or was turned off. Which will at least indicate if it was in your office, in the pub you went to after work, or somewhere else entirely (which may indicate it was stolen, or that you left it in the back of a cab/on the train).
Here's how to turn on Send Last Location:
- Tap Settings > [Your name]
- Tap Find My iPhone.
- Ensure Find My iPhone is set to On.
- Set Send Last Location to On.
Right now it isn't possible to locate an iPhone or iPad that is turned off, however, according to a report by CNBC in November 2016, Apple has patented technology that would allow a stolen or lost iPhone to be switched on remotely and transmit location information to its owner through the Find My iPhone feature.
We're not sure when or if this feature will be employed by Apple in their current or next generation iPhones, but we will be sure to update this article if we learn more.

If you want an independent, cross-platform, third-party location sharing service that isn’t tied to iOS or Android then Glympse is just about your best option right now. It’s primary reason for being is location sharing, so there are a ton of features included to make the service as useful as possible.
You control not just the people can see your location but how long they’re able to view it for, and there’s a web interface if you’re sat at a computer. The app’s versatile enough to do everything from organizing a group night out to telling your boss you’re running late, and messaging tools are included too.
